Indonesia supplies 48% of the world's nickel. Halmahera is paying for it.

At least 5,331 hectares of tropical forest have been cut inside nickel concessions on Halmahera — about 2.04 million metric tons of CO2e. The Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park has built at least five captive coal plants since 2018 and plans twelve, an estimated 3.78 GW a year, burning more coal than Spain or Brazil uses annually. The metal ends up in batteries. The smoke, the sediment and the lost land stay in North Maluku.
Three asks
1. Automakers — Tesla, Ford and Volkswagen: trace your nickel to the mine and publish what you find, including remedy where harm is documented. 2. IWIP and its owners — Tsingshan, Huayou Cobalt and Zhenshi: stop clearing protected and customary forest, halt new captive coal capacity, and compensate families whose land and fishing grounds were taken. 3. The Indonesian government: enforce Protected Forest boundaries, guarantee free, prior and informed consent, and protect the O'Hongana Manyawa's right to remain uncontacted.
The evidence
45 people interviewed across communities near IWIP and nearby mines. 45,065 hectares — the Weda Bay Nickel concession as of 2023; more than 35,000 hectares of concession area on Halmahera lies inside Protected Forest. 140 hectares of Kao Rahai customary forest cleared, affecting Indigenous Tobelo communities. 300–500 O'Hongana Manyawa, in around 30 clans, live in the forests being cut.
